Ductile iron is a type of cast iron that has high strength, high ductility and wear resistance. Due to the presence of spherical (spherical) graphite in the metal, it is resistant to impact, elongation and daily wear and tear.
Advantages of ductile iron castings
Ductile iron castings combine the processing advantages of low melting point, good flow and machinability. It also has many of the engineering advantages of steel, including high strength, ductility and wear resistance. These qualities allow for higher tensile and yield strengths and lower damping capacity.
Microstructure of ductile iron castings
Ductile iron, also known as nodular or ductile iron, has an unusual combination of properties because graphite occurs as spheres rather than flakes as in gray iron. This solidification pattern is obtained by adding a very small but specific amount of magnesium to molten iron. The permissible content of trace elements that can interfere with the formation of graphite nodules in the iron matrix is strictly limited. The added magnesium reacts with the sulfur and oxygen in the molten iron, changing how graphite is formed.
Tensile and Yield Strength
Ductile iron has a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 40,000 psi. Common properties of ductile iron are tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. Due to the nominal and consistent influence of nodular graphite, there is a good correlation between tensile properties and Brinell hardness of ductile iron.
low damping capacity
The relative ability of a material to absorb vibration is evaluated as its damping capacity. Vibration dampening by converting mechanical energy into heat is important for structures and equipment with moving parts. Ductile iron has a relative damping capacity of 0.14, significantly lower than a similar gray iron part with a damping capacity of 1. Still, ductile iron is superior to alloy steels in terms of damping capacity.
